Abstract The Friendly Moralist Society was a benevolent society, established in Charleston South Carolina, 1838 for free men of color (mulatto or mixed race). The group served the community by providing burial aid, purchasing plots and assisting during funerals, for those in need. This collection contains a single warrant issued by Henry L. Pinckney, Collector of the general tax for the parishes of St. Philip's and St. Michael's, to James S. Shingler, Sheriff of Charleston District, authorizing the arrest of the free black, Maria Louisa Silvanneau, of Charleston, for failure to pay the capitation tax of $2.77.
